「former」と「ex」の意味と違い - Former princess Mako (元プリンセス眞子さま)

みなさんこんにちは。

かつてのプリンセス、眞子様と彼女の夫が、最近ニュースになっていた事にお気づきでしょう。

現在メディアでは、もはや彼女はこのポジションではなく“former princess Mako” (元プリンセスの眞子様)、として話されています。

過去に数人の生徒さんから、 former と ex の違いについて質問を受けたことがありますので、ここで皆さんに説明しようと思います。

Formerは誰かがもはやそのポジションを保持していないこと、例えば元大統領、元CEO、元指導者など。

しかしExは、単に昔はそうだったこと、例えば元夫、元大統領、元警官などについて話す時に使われます。

そのため、いくつかは少し混乱してしまうかもしれません。

Exはそのポジションの前任者を意味する事もあります。

そこで、もし私達がアメリカの大統領について話すなら、

「ex president Trump (前大統領のトランプ)」と、

「former president Clinton ( 元大統領のクリントン)」

となります。

Former princess Mako - former vs ex

Hello there everyone. You may have noticed that former princess Mako and her husband have been in the news a fair bit recently. You can see that she is now talked about in the media as “former princess Mako” as this is a position that she no longer holds.  Some of my students have asked me in the past the difference between former and ex so I’ll break it down for you. 

Former is used to talk about a position that somebody no longer holds such as former president, , former CEO, former leader and so on but ex simply just means used to be, like ex husband, ex president, ex police officer and so on so you can see why it can be little confusing for some. 

Ex can also mean the last person in that position so if we were to talk about  American presidents it would be “ex president Trump “ and “former president Clinton”
