Hello again everyone,
In a past blog I talked about commonly quoted movie phrases that are often repeated in natural spoken English. One of those was from the “Lethal Weapon” series, which, originally having been released in 1987 is now on the way to being a golden oldie and in my opinion one which is aging rather well as some movies do and others don’t. There are plenty of great lines from those films but the most often quoted is certainly “I’m getting too old for this shit.”
It’s funny how you see things in a different light as you get older. As a kid watching Lethal Weapon, I just thought it was a cool action film with some nice stunts, fun fight scenes, and quotable lines such as the often repeated “I’m getting too old for this shit” whenever the two main characters are caught up in a difficult situation. Watching it in later years though, I realised that it is actually much more than that and that is why I think it can be enjoyed more than once. It ties in themes of loss, family, and two men who at first dislike each other intensely, eventually becoming friends and helping each other get over the trauma and ptsd they are suffering both having served during the Vietnam War.
Gushing review over. Now let’s get down to business.
“I’m getting too old for this shit” is often used either in a serious manner or ironically when we have any kind of trouble ranging from insignificant to serious.
Examples.
“Jaimie, bad news. You remember you let Liam borrow the car this morning? Well, he’s just smashed it into the neighbours car and they are asking us to pay for the damage!”
“Again?! I’m getting too old for this shit.”
“John, I’ve split the milk. Can you go and grab some from the shop?”
“Oh god. I’m getting too old for this shit.”
As you can see it can be used in any situation. Of course we all know that aging is no kind of fun and we have a load of expressions in English to describe this.
Long in the tooth
“Me and the girls are going clubbing this weekend. You up for it?”
“Me, nah. I’m getting too long in the tooth for all that.
Over the hill.
“I was planning to do another marathon this year but training isn’t going so well. I may just be over the hill.”
Seen better days.
“Everyone expected the old champion to win the fight but he’d seen better days and the younger challenger had him out of there in just two rounds.”

子どもの頃「リーサル・ウェポン」を見たとき、私はただ素敵なスタントやアクション、楽しい格闘シーン、そして二人の主人公が困難な状況に巻き込まれるたびに繰り返される「I’m getting too old for this shit.」のような引用できるセリフがあるかっこいいアクション映画だと思っていました。
しかし、この年になって観なおしてみると、実際にはそれ以上のものであることに気づき、だからこそ何度も楽しめる映画だと思います。
喪失、家族、そして最初は激しく嫌い合っていた二人の男性が最終的に友人となり、ベトナム戦争に従軍したことで抱えているトラウマを互いに乗り越える手助けをするというテーマが織り込まれています。
