Why Do We Call a Long Journey an Odyssey?

Why Do We Call a Long Journey an Odyssey?

If you have been anywhere on planet Earth over the last 6 months or so you’ll probably have noticed that the famous British director Christopher Nolan has released a new movie called the Odyssey, but this is by no means his own original work. This is the most recent adaptation of a story that is basically as old as time itself and in its original form was a poem written somewhere around 3000 years ago in ancient Greece..

The more English you learn, and the more advanced your English level becomes you will start to notice patterns in prefixes and suffixes (not so exciting but very helpful when it comes to test preparation practice) and even similarities to words in other languages like French, German, Greek, and if you are extremely scholarly Latin too. The simple reason for this is that English is the descendant of a huge line of languages known as Indo-European languages that can be traced back even further in time than when The Odyssey was originally written.

Most kids learn this story and its prequel “The Iliad” in western schools and you could basically call it the original hero tale, with all the components of a quest, magic of some kind or other, overcoming great hardship, and a homecoming but I don’t want to go into too much detail on that in case you haven’t seen the movie yet. It is a fantastic film though and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

What I want to focus on today in this blog is how remnants of The Odyssey and The Iliad are still used in modern English today.

The Odyssey. The story of the hero Odysseus making the difficult journey home to his family after a prolonged time at war.

Modern meaning: A difficult journey or experience that often has a profound effect on you.

“Learning English has become a bit of an odyssey for me. There have been plenty of setbacks along the way”

“What was supposed to start as a week-long road trip turned into a 3 month odyssey.”

Mentor: The name of a character in the book who guide the hero’s son while he is gone.

Modern Meaning:

Verb: to teach or guide

“ I was so lucky I had my father to mentor me through high school. I don’t think I’d have got through it without him.”

Noun: a person who helps or guides:

“ It is the responsibility of more senior staff members to act as mentors to the new members in their first year at our firm”

Siren: Mythical creatures who use their song to sailors to lure them to their deaths.

Modern Meaning: a device to signal danger

“ Sirens were going off all over the city after the earthquake occurred.”

The Trojan Horse: a trick used by Greek soldiers to gain access to the city of Troy

A Trojan Horse: Something that may not be what it appears to

“The free app seemed great at first but it turned out to be a Trojan horse that installed spyware on users’ phones.

There are plenty more but these are the most commonly used ones you will hear today. If you haven’t seen the Odyssey, I’d say it’s definitely worth a watch and if you are feeling really adventurous there are modern story book versions of the original (extremely lengthy) poem.

Give them a look if you get a chance and let me know what you thought in class.

『The Odyssey』

★The Odyssey

“Learning English has become a bit of an odyssey for me. There have been plenty of setbacks along the way”

“What was supposed to start as a week-long road trip turned into a 3 month odyssey.”

★Mentor
『The Odyssey』

“ I was so lucky I had my father to mentor me through high school. I don’t think I’d have got through it without him.”

“ It is the responsibility of more senior staff members to act as mentors to the new members in their first year at our firm”

★Siren

“ Sirens were going off all over the city after the earthquake occurred.”

★The Trojan Horse(トロイの木馬)

“The free app seemed great at first but it turned out to be a Trojan horse that installed spyware on users’ phones.
