New Classes! Challenge yourself! But not too much

英語原文

Hello everyone!

My blogs are a bit sporadic of late and that is because we’ve been taking time to update our materials, try and plan extra curricular activities, and also introduce new types of classes to the school. One we are particularly proud of and think could be fantastic is the new “Kensington Film Academy” class. We think it is a wonderful way to enjoy English, meet new people, and also give yourself a bit of a challenge!

The first one failed completely!😅

I blame myself completely for this. I often forget how daunting a task it can be for language learners to take the plunge and do something new because when I was learning Japanese I would try and use it at every available opportunity. That is me though and not everyone is quite as outgoing as I am so today I’d like to give you a bit of food for thought.

The reasons our students study languages differ greatly but I assume we all have one thing in common and that is that we are all aiming to improve our skills.. In order to do this, you have to continuously challenge yourself otherwise you will plateau at a certain level and never get any further. Staying at your level or in the same class/ with the same teacher may be comfortable, but ultimately it is not good for your language learning so always try and aim for slightly higher than your comfort zone.

There are lots of ways you can do this.

Firstly, and this is something we always try to encourage students to do in class, is to always add to what you say. It’s called i+1

Ex. “I went to Tokyo.”

Better:” I went to Tokyo last weekend with a friend. It was great. “

Even better: “I went to Tokyo last weekend with a friend. We went up the Skytree and it was great. Have you ever been there?”

Here you are constantly trying to add to what you say and at the end asking a question back which gives you the chance to continue the conversation.

Other things you can do.

  • try mixing up tenses

  • You usually watch movies with Japanese subtitles- try English-then none

  • Look for synonyms and antonyms of common words and phrases and use them in class.

  • Been in a level 1 or 2 class for a while? Give 2 or 3 a shot. (same for private lessons)

  • Try some of our new activities or classes to take you away from the structure of the lessons you are used to.

  • Use new words and phrases learned in previous classes as much as possible until they stick.

Basically you are trying to aim for something that is slightly difficult for you but not too hard. Too hard will be frustrating and doesn’t really help you. You have to move up gradually so for example go from kids books, to graded readers, short stories, to novels if you want to practice your reading skills. The same goes for writing, speaking, and listening. Always strive to do a little more.

We will be holding the “Kensington Film Academy” class again this month on the 20th. I really suggest you give it a try if you are serious about improving your English and I also think it will be a nice break from our usual lessons and potentially a lot of fun!

We will also be changing how we do our current level 3 classes. They will be separated into Level 3 Discussion and level 3 Pairs. The current level 3 classes will be conducted using articles, lectures, and short videos with a view to creating round table discussion and perhaps even debate. We will be opening new level 3 pairs classes on a couple of days for you which will follow the same structure of the classes we have now but with a slight jump in the difficulty level of the class. Imagine level 2 on steroids!

This and the new style of classes we will be opening will give you the perfect opportunity to give your skills a try in a new setting so we are looking forward to seeing you push yourself a little.

See you in the new classes!
Jaimie

I went to Tokyo.”
i+1:”I went to Tokyo last weekend with a friend. It was great.“
更に i+1: “I went to Tokyo last weekend with a friend. We went up the Skytree and it was great. Have you ever been there?”

「Kensington Film Academy」
