2025 A Year of Reminiscence!

Hello everyone,
Here we are at the end of the year again. It’s flown by as usual but now we are nearing the holidays, I can sit back and take stock of what I've done this year. The answer is a lot of catching up.
I’ve been pretty lucky this year in that I’ve had enough time to travel. I went to Yufuin in February, Tokyo in spring and again in October, Yakushima, and also Thailand. Although I haven’t had any visits from family this year, I’ve had the chance to meet up with old friends and despite usually being a bit on the negative side at the end of most years, I think that maybe this one has been slightly special.
My trip to Yakushima was with a friend from New York, and if all goes well I’ll be heading over there to repay him the visit next year. He used to live in Japan and regularly comes back so it was really nice to see him and his girlfriend, but what really struck me this year was how friendships never really change no matter how long it’s been since you met.
In August I got a message out of the blue from my old flat mate who my wife and I lived with when I was saving up to come to Japan. We had limited time to meet since he now has two little kids so we decided to meet halfway between Tokyo and Fukuoka and spent a day in Osaka seeing the sights, shooting the breeze, and taking an alcohol fuelled trip down memory lane. We figured out that it’s been twenty years since we last met and I was surprised how easily we fell back into conversation without any awkwardness at all. Neither of us had changed very much except for some thinning hair and a slight paunch. It was a bit on the surreal side because I have started to feel my age this past couple of years but on that day I felt as if time had stood still for both of us. We agreed that the next time we meet will not be 2045!
My trip to Thailand was also very refreshing. Not just for the fact that I love the country and really enjoy just being there but also because of who I went with. My oldest friend from childhood and I went together and we do keep in touch a fair bit but what I enjoy the most about spending time with people from back home is that I can just relax, let my guard down, and really be myself. It may sound strange but living in a different country with a very different culture can be a bit on the stressful side and being with people who think and act the same as you has now become something very precious indeed.
This year has made me realise that maybe I’ve been kind of lazy about keeping in touch with people back home and I think next year I’m going to spend a bit less time in Daimyo and a bit more time connecting with people from my past.

また今年も年末がやってきました。いつものようにあっという間（flown by）でしたが、今、休暇シーズンが近づいてきて、今年やったことを振り返ってじっくり考える（take stock of）ことができます。
私は、たくさんの募る話をすること（catching up）です。
幸運なことに、今年はたくさん旅行をする時間がありました。2月に由布院、春に東京、そして10月にまた東京、屋久島、そしてタイにも行きました。
今年はスコットランドから家族が遊びに来ることはありませんでしたが、古い友人たちと会う機会があり、たいてい年末にはちょっとネガティブな気持ちになることが多いのですが、今年はもしかしたら少し特別だったかもしれないと思います。
屋久島への旅行は、ニューヨークの友人と一緒でした。うまくいけば来年、お返しに彼を訪ねに行く予定です。
彼は以前日本に住んでいて定期的に戻ってくるので、彼とガールフレンドに会えて本当に嬉しかったのですが、今年特に印象に残ったのは、どれだけ時間が経っても友情は決して変わらないということです。
8月に、私が日本に来るためにお金を貯めていた（saving up）頃に妻と一緒に住んでいた古いルームメイトから突然（out of the blue）メッセージが来ました。
彼には今2人の小さな子供がいるので会える時間が限られていたため、東京と福岡の間の大阪で会って観光をし、おしゃべり（shooting the breeze）をし、お酒を飲みながら思い出話に花をさかせ（trip down memory lane）ました。
最後に会ってから20年が経っていることに気づき、まったく気まずさなく簡単に会話が弾んだことに驚きました。少し髪が薄くなり、お腹が少し出たこと以外は、二人ともあまり変わっていませんでした。
少し非現実的な感じでした。というのも、この数年で自分の年齢を感じ始めて（feel my age）いたのですが、その日は二人にとって時間が止まったかのよう（time had stood still）に感じられたからです。
次に会うのは2045年よりも前にしようと約束しました。
タイへの旅行もとてもリフレッシュできました。その国が大好きで、ただそこにいるだけでとても楽しいということもありますが、一緒に行った相手のおかげでもあります。
幼なじみの一番古い友人と一緒に行きました。私たちはかなり連絡を取り合っているのですが、地元の人々と時間を過ごすことで最も楽しいのは、リラックスして、警戒心を解いて（let my guard down）、本当の自分でいられることです。
おかしく聞こえるかもしれませんが、非常に異なる文化を持つ異国で生活することは、少しストレスを伴うこともあり、自分と同じように考え、行動する人々と一緒にいることは、今では本当に貴重なことになりました。
今年は、地元の人々と連絡を取り合うこと（keeping in touch）について、もしかしたら少し怠けていたのかもしれないと気づかされました。
来年は大名で過ごす時間を少し減らして、昔の知り合いとつながる時間をもう少し増やそうと思います。
