I’ve just come back from a very eventful 4 day trip to Yakuhsima, soaked to the bone, stiff all over, and basking in the glory of my achievements!
An old friend of mine from the US is back in town right now with his partner and we made the slightly ill informed decision to go hiking in Yakushima for a few days. Being used to the usual convenience and beautiful sunny weather we are used to here in Fukuoka, I had no idea what we were in for.
Firstly, Yakushima seems to have an endless supply of rain. It was torrential and virtually non-stop but it didn’t deter us in our quest to see the “Jomon Sugi”. Buses and taxis are in short supply there and nothing accepts new Japanese notes or coins either so even making it to the trail for 6 in the morning was no mean feat but we made it somehow and set off on what was supposed to be a moderate trek. It turned out to be nothing of the sort with the heaviest rain I have ever seen pouring endlessly on us, some dodgy signposting, dicey looking bridges over massive waterfalls, and an inexhaustible supply of leeches attacking my beautiful legs.
We did make it to the end though and obviously got back down too because here I am writing this blog and I have to say that after the trek when I had dried myself off and restocked on carbohydrates I appreciated what we had just seen. It is an amazing place with some really dense almost jungle-like conditions, the old cedar trees are nothing short of magical, and it wasn’t just leeches, I got to see monkeys and deer in the wild, plus some very odd insects and a frog about the size of a small car. I can see how it was the inspiration for “Princess Mononoke” and also why it has World Heritage status.
The other thing that struck me about the island was how friendly and kind the people were. Nobody seems to bat an eyelid at the presence of foreigners and they will go out of their way to help you. The old lady in the liquor store lending me a bottle opener for the night rather than me having to drink cans of Sapporo was my favourite of those moments and I made sure to get up super early to return it.
One word of warning if you are ever thinking of going there would be to keep a very close eye on the weather. Our flight there was on the verge of being cancelled and our flight back (plus all the flights that and the next day) were all called off due to bad flying conditions meaning an extra 4 hour wait plus two hour ferry to Kagoshima and bullet train back to Fukuoka, making it a rather expensive ride home.
Having travelled a fair bit by now I tend to take it in my stride when these things happen but if you are of a slightly less mild-mannered nature it could be a bit on the frustrating side.

アメリカから古い友人がパートナーを連れて遊びにきており、私たちは屋久島に数日間ハイキングに行くという、ちょっと下調べ不足の決断をしました。福岡で慣れ親しんだ便利さや、美しい晴天にすっかり慣れていたいた私たちには、どんなことになるのか見当もついていませんでした。
まず、屋久島には雨の尽きない時期があるようです。激しい雨がほぼ止むことなく降り続きましたが、私たちの「縄文杉」を見に行くという目的を止める理由にはなりませんでした。バスやタクシーはあまりなく、新しい日本円紙幣や硬貨も受け付けていないため、朝の6時にトレイルに到着するだけでも大変な苦労でしたが、何とか到着し、穏やかなトレッキングに出発したはずでした。しかし、それは全くの誤算でした。私がこれまで見た中で最も激しい雨が絶え間なく降り注ぎ、はっきりと見えない標識、巨大な滝の上を跨ぐ危険な橋、そして私の美しい脚を襲いつづけるヒルの大群が待ち受けていました。
私たちはなんとか最後までたどり着くことができましたし、当然ながら下山もしました。今こうしてこのブログを書いているからです。正直に言うと、トレッキングの後、体を乾かして炭水化物を補給した後に、私たちが目にした景色に本当に感謝しました。そこは驚くべき場所で、非常に密集したジャングルのような環境が広がっています。古い杉の木々は魔法のような美しさで、ヒルがいるだけではありません。野生の猿や鹿、奇妙な昆虫、そして小型の車ほどの大きさのカエルも見ることができました。これが『もののけ姫』のインスピレーションとなった理由や、世界遺産に指定されている理由が理解できます。
もう一つ、屋久島で最も印象深かったことは、人がみんな親切で優しかったことです。外国人に対して誰も驚いたりしないし、積極的に助ようとしてくれるのです。特に、酒屋で働いていた年配の女性が、私がサッポロの缶ビールを飲む代わりに、夜の間だけボトルオープナーを貸してくれたことが最も印象的です。私はそれを返すために早朝に起きました。
屋久島に行くことを考えているなら、天候に十分注意することをお勧めします。私たちの往路のフライトはキャンセル寸前で、復路のフライト（および翌日以降のすべてのフライト）は、悪天候のためすべて欠航となりました。その結果、4時間の追加の待ち時間に加え、鹿児島まで2時間のフェリー、そして福岡まで新幹線で戻るという、かなり高額な帰路となりました。
これまでかなりの旅をしてきた私は、このような事態が発生しても冷静に対処しようとしますが、あまり穏やかではない性格の方は、少しイライラするかもしれません。
