Hello, everyone,
Apologies
My blog is unusually late this time round since we’ve been busy with tax season, hiring new staff for spring and preparing for the first official Kensington Foodies at Duang Dee in Yakuin, and finishing my training for the Harukaze half marathon this weekend.
The foodies event went very well so thank you all for coming.The food was excellent as always and I was very happy to have a chance to share a place I love with all of you. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did and can’t wait for your suggestions on the next place to go.
A Few Good Men
Today I’ll be continuing my movies themed blogs and I have to say they are making me feel a bit old since they are all from the 90s and 80s!
If you’re a fan of Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholoson, or Demi Moore and you are over 40, then you’ve probably seen the military courtroom drama “A Few Good Men” it’s an oldie but a goodie combining a murder, an underdog lawyer, and an overbearing marine general who has the full force of the American military on his side. Quite a combination!
Sound good? That’s because it is and if you have seen it then you’ll definitely remember the final showdown between the young lawyer and the general who is on the stand to testify in the aforementioned murder case. If you do remember that then you definitely won’t have forgotten this!.

Why I love this
I don’t want to give spoilers but it’s a pretty powerful scene which was highly quotable back then and is still quoted even to this day, especially between me and my business partner over slack!
I’ve watched this film multiple times because I have a kind of obsession with movies from that period, and as with most good movies the depth of those three lines has revealed itself to me as I’ve grown older and hopefully wiser.
There is so much in that scene which culminates in those three lines and I think it still resonates today that people in a position of power can feel they are above the law. Not mentioning any names but I suppose you can guess who I mean for the time being. It conveys the fact that the general feels he is owed a debt of thanks for the service he provides in making the country safe, the sacrifices he and his men make for civilians daily and also that perhaps, the everyday citizens of the country cannot handle the brutal truths of life in the marines and therefore are in no place to be poking their noses in where they aren’t wanted.
Don’t believe you can pack so much into 11 words? Then you’ll have to be the judge so have a look and tell me what you thought of it next time you met.
There are so many good lines in that film and another I often use during the sweltering Japanese summer is this, also from the general.
“I’m a fair guy but this….XXXXXXing heat is driving me crazy!”

Foodiesはとてもうまくいきましたね！来てくださった皆様、ありがとうございました。

A Few Good Men
今日は映画をテーマにしたブログを続けますが、どれも90年代と80年代のものなので、少し年をとったように感じてしまいます！
トム・クルーズ、ジャック・ニコルソン、デミ・ムーアのファンで、40歳以上なら、軍事法廷ドラマ「ア・フュー・グッドメン」を観たことがあるでしょう。
古い作品ですが名作で、殺人事件、不利な立場の弁護士、そしてアメリカ軍の全力を味方につけた横暴な海兵隊の将軍を組み合わせています。かなりの組み合わせです！
面白そうに聞こえますか？その通り！
もし観たことがあるなら、前述の殺人事件で証言台に立つ将軍と若い弁護士との最終対決を間違いなく覚えているでしょう。
それを覚えているなら、これを絶対に忘れていないはずです！

大好きなセリフ
ネタバレはしたくありませんが、当時非常に引用されていたかなり強力なシーンで、今でもたまに引用されています。
特に私とビジネスパートナーとの間でよく使います！
私はあの時代の映画に一種の執着があるので、この映画を何度も見てきました。そして、ほとんどの良い映画と同様に、年を重ね、願わくばより賢くなるにつれて、あの3行の深さが明らかになってきました。
この3行には、このシーンの色々なことが集約されています。時代は違えど、権力のある人がときに法より上に自らがいると思ってしまうという問題は、今でも見られるのではないでしょうか。
名前は挙げませんが、今のところ誰のことを意味しているか推測できると思います。
将軍が、国を安全にするために提供するサービスに対して感謝の借りがあると感じていること、彼と彼のぶかたちが民間人のために日々行っている犠牲、そして恐らく、国一般市民は海兵隊での生活の残酷な真実を扱えないため、望まれていないところに首を突っ込む立場にはないという事実を伝えています。
たったこれだけでそれほど多くのことを詰め込めるとは信じられませんか？
それならあなた自身が判断しなければなりません。見て、次回会ったときにどう思ったか教えてください。
あの映画には非常に多くの良いセリフがあり、私が蒸し暑い日本の夏によく使うもうひとつのセリフも、同じく将軍からのものです。
